All new cars produced by Tesla from now on will be equipped with hardware specially designed for fully autonomous driving for the vehicles – was said by the CEO Elon Musk.
The vehicles will be produced with eight cameras with visibility of 360 degrees, ranging up to 250 meters. 12 ultrasonic sensors to complement the ability for orientation in space of the vehicle, but also to detect any “hard and soft objects.” The radius of action of these sensors is twice wider than the system used now.
In cars, Tesla will set a new trip computer, with 40 times the computational power compared to the last generation.
Tesla has already made attempts to test the new system, and posted a video which is shown as a completely independent vehicle navigating through the city and the fast roads without any problems.
The new Model X goes out of the garage, going through the city, registering everything that happens on the highway and finally arrives in front of the Tesla Headquarters, which leaves the passenger and searches for a parking space and parks itself. Yes, all the time there was a driver sitting in the car, but only for legal reasons – he wasn’t involved in the process of driving.
As noted by Elon Musk on Twitter – the car is “smart” enough to recognize even a parking place for disabled people, and to avoid parking there.
Musk claims that when the new system will pass all security tests, the owners of Tesla will have the opportunity to “call” cars with a button on the mobile phone – even if you are on the other end of the country, sooner or later the car will find you.
The company’s plan is to complete the tests by the end of 2017, after which it will insert a software upgrade in all the new models.
